Dangerous and Deadly Springfield Intersections
The Springfield News-Leader took data from the Missouri Department of Transportation to determine which intersections had the most crashes over the course of a year. Unsurprisingly, the roads that topped the list were some of the busiest intersections in the city.
According to the Springfield News-Leader, the intersections with the most crashes in Springfield were:
- Glenstone Avenue and Sunshine Street
- Kansas Expressway and Sunshine Street
- Glenstone Avenue and Battlefield Road
- Campbell Avenue and Walnut Lawn Street
- National Avenue and Battlefield Road
After reviewing the data each year, Public Works Traffic Engineering took steps to reduce the number of traffic-related accidents and injuries. Problem areas were identified and addressed. In some cases, vast improvements were made to some of the most treacherous intersections in the area.
Intersection Accident Update
By 2020, many of the same intersections were still the site of a large number of traffic accidents. However, there were significant crash reductions when safety measures were implemented.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT), Kansas Expressway and Sunshine Street had the most with 41 crashes in 2020. This represented only a slight reduction from 2016, when there were 48 crashes. Glenstone Avenue and Sunshine Street, which previously had the most collisions, dropped to 6th, with 25 wrecks including three injury crashes.
Other intersections such as National Avenue and Battlefield Road saw a steep decline in crashes after safety efforts were undertaken to reduce the number of accidents. In 2016, there were 36 crashes; four years later, there were only 17. Traffic engineers diminished the wide radius, helping to lower the number of merge accidents plaguing the intersection.

City engineers continue to monitor and identify areas of concern throughout Springfield, but many drivers can take preventative measures to avoid collisions.

- Put away cell phones and other distractions
- Allow plenty of time to get to and from your destination
- Pay attention to traffic signals and construction sites
- Know the area you are driving
- Be prepared for sudden stops on congested roads
